Glasgow Community Food Network Fair Work Statement

Glasgow Community Food Network (GCFN) works to connect and support the people and organisations of Glasgow who grow, produce and eat food so that together we can:

  • a) Build a healthier food system
  • b) Help reduce Glasgow’s food waste
  • c) Ensure everyone in Glasgow has improved equal access to affordable healthy food
  • d) Support community food organisations to be recognised for local/ethical/sustainable practice

This vision starts in our workplace, where Glasgow Community Food Network aspires to develop and demonstrate best employment practices. We are committed to the principles of Fair Work First . Fair Work is work that offers all individuals an effective voice, opportunity, security, fulfilment and respect. Glasgow Community Food Network has adopted policies which support a positive working environment where the resources, talent and skills of all employees are utilised and feel valued.

These include:

  • A commitment to pay above the real living wage threshold and guaranteeing a decent standard of income for all employees. We shall comply with the real living wage threshold unless there are over-riding financial reasons not to do so. Our pay structure aims to fairly reward and reflect the importance of every member of staff. As an organisation GCFN operates three Pay Bands ; and we operate a wage ratio of 2:1.
  • Offering security of contract, including flexible hours and other entitlements and benefits such as sick pay and pension. Glasgow Community Food Network also offers generous holiday terms.
  • We operate a Flexible Working Policy and promote flexible and hybrid working opportunities where possible, including Time Off In Lieu (TOIL), to ensure employees have good work-life balance
  • Equal Opportunities and reasonable adjustment policies
  • A wide range of staff development, training and wellbeing opportunities with regular internal and external training.
  • A collaborative approach to developing our organisational policies and procedures, with staff representation on Board Working Groups. We encourage autonomy in day to day working practices and operate inclusive recruitment
    processes.
  • Our staff and sessional workers’ wellbeing is important to us; we have regular
check-ins and provide extra support where needed, including access to
professional one-to-one counselling. We also provide team developmental
sessions and wider organisation development with extra support sometimes
provided by external experts in their field.

Implementation of the Fair Work First Principles

To support us as we continue to develop best practice we are delivering on a Fair Work First action and implementation plan. This identifies work that we are currently doing and where we will continue to review and develop actions including to:

  1. Support and develop a range of channels for our employees to have an effective
voice. We support Trade Union membership, and work collaboratively with staff in
the development of our organisational policies and recruitment processes.
  2. Continue investment in workforce development, allocating funds for staff training
and working with external organisations to learn and share best practice.
  3. Ongoing development and action on policies relating to Equality and Diversity
including action to create a more diverse and inclusive workplace.
  4. Monitor pay and gender. Glasgow Community Food Network does not have a
    gender pay gap.
  5. Support people to feel valued and respected and that they have a sense of
purpose in work and wider society; and
  6. Promote innovation and productivity.
The Fair Work First action and implementation plan sits with the Board for delivery.
We regularly review and report on progress against our Fair Work First action and
    implementation plan.
