Wing Hong

Idea in a Nutshell

Wing Hong Chinese Elderly Centre will deliver a project which will bring the community together by transforming Oasis on San Jai, their newly revitalised garden at 122 Hill Street in Garnethill, into a lively space for growing fresh vegetables and cooking outdoors. The garden was previously used for growing produce but had become overgrown and underused. Now, after rejuvenation, Wing Hong will use it to connect people through food—growing vegetables and using them in outdoor Chinese cooking sessions. This project will celebrate cultural heritage, encourage sustainable food practices, and promote healthy eating in a welcoming community space.

This project will mainly benefit elderly members of the Chinese Community by giving them opportunities to socialise, stay active, and learn new skills. However, it is also open to the wider community, creating a friendly space where people of all backgrounds can connect through food and nature.

Participants—including elderly members, volunteers, and local residents—will take part in hands-on workshops to learn about growing food, plant care, and eco-friendly gardening.

In addition to gardening, the project will offer outdoor cooking sessions where people can cook and share traditional Chinese dishes using vegetables grown in the garden. These sessions will also explore food preservation techniques and cultural food traditions. By linking food, culture, and sustainability, this project will help build stronger community connections and encourage people to appreciate fresh, locally grown ingredients.

Experience

Wing Hong exists to promote equal opportunities for the Chinese elders in accessing various social, health, welfare and housing services.

The purpose of Wing Hong is to improve the health and well-being of the Chinese elderly who live in the Glasgow area.

The objectives are to enhance the quality of service users’ life by reducing loneliness and isolation, maintaining and improving their independence. The Centre also promotes healthy lifestyle choices and raising awareness of the needs of the Chinese elderly.
