Gathering Ground

Idea in a Nutshell

Green Glasgow Compost Initiative The Green Glasgow Compost Initiative aims to involve the local community in composting activities by collecting compostable materials from hyper local cafes & restaurants Glasgow and producing compost for community gardening.

Experience

We are Gathering Ground a food-led community space in North Glasgow.

We will run the project on our newly opened Canal Side Croft. We are in a great position to make the most of the monies as we currently don't have a composting system set up on our premises and as a cafe we do product organic waste that can be used for the project.

As a community garden & cafe we also have spaces that can directly use the compost which is produced. It will help with our community gardening & the produce we grow for the cafe so its entirely circular.

We have an area of land that we have marked out as the composting area and are now just in need of funding from a project like this to get our composting started.

We will be working with volunteer Stephen Koepplinger, a compost expert to deliver the project who also has an MSC in Ecological Resource Management.

See his latest compost making video here.

He is also Director of company Kelvin Compost

We will be using this project as a pilot to take on a larger area of land for composting which is currently owned by Scottish Canals.

We have have the support of Olivia Lassiere - Environment Manager at Scottish Canals towards the project who would like to see more initiatives like this happening in the local area.
