SALTIRE

(St Angela’s Learning Together in Respect for the Environment)

Idea in a Nutshell

To improve green waste composting in our community and introduce food waste composting. To install a Joraform Compost Tumbler & build 4 pallet compost bays. To run an educational programme including an adult workshop and a pupil workshop for those leading the project, a whole school assembly for all pupils & staff and a community workshop & information stand at our community celebration event. All compost created will be used to nourish the soil in our community and school food growing projects.

Experience

We are a group of 7 women who have been developing the school grounds for 4 years now. Through our volunteer work, workshops, outdoor learning with pupils and funding applications we have developed our school grounds beyond recognition and we have discovered a supportive community of close friends. Many of us are immigrants without family living locally and SALTIRE is our grounding force, grounding us in our adopted community and giving us a sense of belonging. Our catchphrase is “Tuesday is the best day of the week” because we spend it outdoors with friends, making positive changes to a place we love. Some of us are now past

parents/carers of pupils but we stay on because it is a community project beyond the confines of school.

We are in the best position to deliver community composting to St Angela’s school and wider community because we work in the grounds with pupils, staff and community members weekly and because we are invested strongly in the project’s success.
