Urban Roots is a community led environmental charity working across the Southside of Glasgow. We empower local people to make choices and lifestyle changes that are beneficial for them, their communities and the environment. Our teams are working on lots of different projects: We have transformed numerous derelict or unused green spaces into thriving, blossoming community gardens where herbs and vegetables, fruit and flowers can be grown. This makes the area look more attractive, helps to create well used, safe social places and brings people together. Malls Mire woods has been changed from a neglected site for fly-tipping, into a thriving community run Local Nature Reserve, with an exciting program of conservation work, therapeutic activities and outdoor adventure play for children. Urban Explorers after school clubs and Into the Woods holiday programs run in community gardens and woodlands across the Southside, using the outdoor setting to support children to play and learn outside. The Great Grub program has grown to involve six week cookery courses, community meals, drop in weekly cookery clubs and provision for REHIS qualifications.

Skills and resources

Skills and resources I/we can share

We have several green spaces, both gardens and woodland. These can be used for events or growing spaces can be adopted. We are a REHIS registered training centre and can provide Cooking Skills and Elementary Food & Health Certificate courses. Our Grub Hub in Govan has a kitchen available for cookery groups to use. We have stock of Forest School equipment including campfire cooking equipment. We also have a stock of indoor cooking equipment. We are happy to share 'Grow Your Own' and 'Great Grub Cooking Course' materials and facilitate courses (funding dependent).

Skills and resources I/we need

We are always looking for long term sustainable funding. We are also on the look out for community kitchens that we can hire.
