Compost Connections - Alexandra Park Food Forest

Welcome to Compost Connections - GCFN's new compost network and peer group.
Following on from our February visit to SALTIRE Community Allotments, we have another fantastic Glasgow Composting project opening its doors to us in May! Alexandra Park Food Forest have recently built a hot bed for propagating plants, and also have a large scale wormery to show us.
Meet at the Kitchen Garden for a cup of tea first: https://maps.app.goo.gl/vBJWqnkUfsbMYbL17
Then we’ll have a walk around the whole Alexandra Park Food Forest site.

More info About Alexandra Park Food Forest Composting Set-up
We have a couple of compost set ups for different reasons. Our food and garden waste goes into our large wormery. It’s a continuous flow wormery with rails underneath to allow the wormcasts to fall through. The worm casts are very biologically rich and we add them to our veggie beds and around the trees in the Food Forest to increase biodiversity and improve soil health.
Just this year we have also built a hot compost propagator. This holds a large amount of woodchip mulch which gives off heat through the decomposing processes. We’ve built it especially for the purpose of the heat and are using it to warm up new chili, tomato and okra seedlings.
We also have a leaf mould bay where we gather fallen leaves and a pile of inherited compost from the previous gardeners that hasn’t got a lot of life in it!
We receive regular donations of wood chip mulch from tree surgeons. We use these to improve the soil directly around the Food Forest trees and fruit bushes, as well as to mark out the paths and soak up the puddles! If you’d like to give us a hand we can do some mulching of the trees and bushes on this visit.
